National Eisteddfod to be held in Cardiff in 2028

Wales’ biggest cultural festival, the National Eisteddfod, will be held in Cardiff in 2028, organisers have confirmed.

It will be the first time in a decade the festival has been held in the Welsh capital.

Bosses added the Cardiff event would be ticketed with a “traditional” set-up, but are yet to confirm the exact location.

The announcement was made on the final day of this year’s festival, in Llantwd, Pembrokeshire, a short distance from where the first was held 850 years ago.

The National Eisteddfod takes place in a different part of Wales each year, swapping between north and south, and is traditionally held in the first week of August.

It was previously announced that the 2027 festival would be held in Powys, for the first time in more than a decade.

It attracts about 150,000 people a year, and features poetry, literature, music, drama and visual arts, primarily conducted through the Welsh language.

It includes competitive performances, concerts, exhibitions, stalls, activities and formal ceremonies.

There are also other, smaller versions of the festival that take place, including the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Denbighshire and the youth-orientated Eisteddfod yr Urdd.
