A woman killed earlier this month died from a gunshot wound to the chest, an inquest has heard.

Pontypridd Coroner’s court heard Joanne Penney, 40, was found by police, lying on her back and unresponsive on the living room floor of flat 10, Llys Illtyd, Green Park, Talbot Green in Rhondda Cynon Taf at 18:10 GMT on Sunday 9 March.

The court was told she could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination gave a cause of death as “gunshot wound to left chest, involving heart and left lung pending toxicology and microscopy”.

At the opening of the inquest, the court heard Ms Penney was born in Aberdare but was of “no fixed abode”.

Senior coroner Graeme Hughes said Joanne Penney’s death clearly involved “violence” and adjourned the inquest due to the ongoing police investigation into her death.

Six people have appeared in court charged in connection with the murder and were remanded in custody ahead of a trial.

Speaking after her death, Joanne Penney’s family said they were devastated and described her as someone who was ” loved deeply by all who knew her”.
