SDLP’s Justin McNulty not selected for election in Newry and Armagh

Justin McNulty has not been selected by the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) to run in the Newry and Armagh constituency for next year’s assembly selection.

Crossmaglen councillor Pete Byrne won the vote at a selection convention in Newry on Thursday night.

McNulty has been an assembly member since 2016.

In 2024, McNulty was suspended from the party after quitting Stormont early “without permission” to manage a Gaelic football team, before later having the whip restored.

Byrme is the party group leader on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

The SDLP said he has served as a councillor for 10 years.

“I’m incredibly grateful to SDLP members across Newry and Armagh for putting their trust in me,” Byrne said.

“I want to be a relentless champion for Newry and Armagh – fighting for Daisy Hill, supporting our local businesses and farmers, developing the potential for this region through the Belfast-Dublin economic corridor, improving infrastructure and ensuring that our towns, villages and rural communities get the public services they deserve.”

He also paid tribute to McNulty and “his work representing people across this constituency”.
