Farming award joy for Derbyshire teen inspired by late grandad

In choosing William as the winner, the judges of the Farmers Guardian Young Farming Hero award, external praised his efforts.

“William balanced school and a part-time job whilst playing a vital role in helping to keep the family farm running when his grandad fell ill,” they said.

“He is a passionate, talented and dedicated young farmer who has a strong work ethic and has shown unwavering support for his family through an incredibly difficult time.”

William plans to continue working on the farm after sitting his GCSE exams next summer and is hoping to train as a butcher.

“Winning the award was an emotional time because my grandpa wasn’t there to celebrate it with us,” he said.

“I sat with him in the tractor from a very young age and we went up and down the field on the quad and the digger. He taught me everything and I miss him dearly.”

He helps with all the jobs on a normal farm, including feeding, animal health checks, lambing and fencing.
