Osteoporosis: How do you improve your bone health?

Advertisements

Imagine finding out you have low done density while doing your job.

That’s what happened to BBC health correspondent Jenny Rees, who got a scan while doing a story about bone health.

The results indicate she has osteopenia, the precursor to osteoporosis, a condition that leaves thousands of people at risk of fractures.

It’s got her thinking more about how to improve her bone health by doing more exercise, including lifting weights if possible.

Yoga can help to improve balance and prevent falls, while changes to the diet can make bones stronger, including eating dairy products, leafy green vegetables, dried fruit and tofu for calcium, and egg yolks, oily fish and red meat for vitamin D.

It comes as the Welsh government has made a commitment, by 2030, for the Welsh NHS to identify 80% of osteoporosis patients, treat 50% of those, and follow up with 80% of treated patients by 2030.
