Londonderry: Two charged after assault rifle seized

Two men have been charged in connection with the seizure of an assault rifle and ammunition in Londonderry.

The gun – described by police as an AK-47 “variant” – was recovered following the search of a car in the Letterkenny Road area of the city on Tuesday.

A 56-year-old man arrested at the scene and a 59-year-old man detained during follow-up searches face a number of charges.

These include possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life.

Both men are due to appear before Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on Friday via videolink.
