First Minister Eluned Morgan has sent congratulations from Wales to the newly elected Pope Leo XIV.

The election of Robert Prevost, the first American pope, follows the death of Pope Francis in April at the age of 88.

Morgan said on X “Llongyfarchiadau (congratulations) from Wales to His Holiness Leo XIV on his election as Pope.

“May his papacy bring peace and understanding,” she said.

Mark O’Toole, who was named archbishop of Cardiff-Menevia by Pope Francis in 2022, said he was “overjoyed to see the election of Pope Leo”.

“The Catholic community across south Wales and Herefordshire assure him of our prayer, love and fidelity.

“With his global experience and deep faith, I know he will be lovingly received, not only by Catholics, but by fellow Christians, people of all faiths and all men and women of goodwill.

“He will make an outstanding contribution to peace and stability in our world.

“Long live the Pope.”

The Welsh Conservative leader in the Senedd, Darren Millar, also congratulated Pope Leo.

He said on X: “May God grant you wisdom as you take on your new responsibilities, and great joy as you proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord to the nations.”
