Yoga may help relieve irritable bowel syndrome symptoms

Yoga is best known for improving flexibility, building strength and reducing stress. Research suggests it may also help ease symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common digestive disorder that affects millions of people.

A review published in Comprehensive Physiology found that people with IBS who practiced yoga experienced fewer digestive symptoms, as well as lower levels of anxiety and depression. While more research is needed to determine which yoga practices are most effective and how much yoga is needed to produce lasting benefits, the findings point to yoga as a promising complementary approach for managing IBS.

Scientists believe the benefits may lie in the gut-brain axis, the communication network that links the digestive system and the brain. This connection helps explain why stress can trigger stomach discomfort or worsen IBS symptoms. In people with IBS, these signals may become especially sensitive.

Yoga combines physical movement, controlled breathing and mindfulness, all of which can activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s “rest and digest” mode. When this system is activated, stress levels decrease and digestion may function more smoothly.

Certain yoga poses may also support digestive health. Seated forward folds may help calm the nervous system, while seated spinal twists engage the muscles surrounding the abdomen, creating gentle pressure that may massage the digestive organs. Deep breathing exercises also engage the diaphragm, producing subtle pressure changes in the abdomen that may further support digestion.

As scientists continue to uncover the connections among the brain, nervous system and digestive tract, research suggests that yoga’s benefits extend beyond muscles and flexibility. For some people living with IBS, a regular yoga practice may also help improve gut health.
