Well Society board offers vision for future of Motherwell as they oppose Barmacks

The Well Society board is proposing a “fresh start for fan ownership” at Motherwell as they oppose an investment plan from the Barmack family.

The supporters’ group has a 71% stake at Fir Park and its members are to vote this month on revised terms set out by the US-based Barmacks and the club’s board.

The Well Society board insists it is open to new investment “provided they accurately value the club, safeguard fan-ownership and ensure sustainable financial stability in the long term”.

They go on to say that they have “already identified several interested individuals who are eager to support such a scheme”.

A 28-page document, external promises a “revitalised and more influential” Well Society and commits to “renewed fundraising efforts” along with administrative changes and a governance review.

Having had a controlling interest since 2016, the group’s board pledge to be “more open, transparent and accountable” as they seek to expand membership.

Erik and Courtney Barmack aim to provide £1.95m over a six-year period, with the offer contingent on the Well Society contributing £1.35m over the same time.

It would leave the former Netflix vice-president and his wife with a 47% holding, with the Well Society’s share dropping to 50.1%.

The Well Society currently raises £180,000 annually through paying members.

“This initiative is not just about numbers; it’s about enriching our community spirit and ensuring that Motherwell FC remains a source of pride for generations to come,” says the message from the group’s board.

A two-week voting period on the Barmack’s offer starts on 8 July.
