Wales call up new faces for Australia in Jess Fishlock’s final game

Wales great Jess Fishlock will end her international career in the friendly against Australia this month, while eight players are set to begin their own.

Manager Rhian Wilkinson will also be missing eight players who were in her Euro 2025 squad for the friendly double-header against the Matildas on 25 October (14:00 BST) at Cardiff City Stadium, and then Poland on 28 October (19:45 GMT) at Newport’s Rodney Parade.

Fishlock is set to win her 166th cap, and she will look to add to her Wales record goals tally of 48.

With the 38-year-old having played for Melbourne Victory during her glittering club career – helping them secure a historic Premiership and Championship double – it is fitting she will take centre stage in what will be the first women’s football international between Wales and Australia.

As well as being without Fishlock in the following game against a Poland side who were fellow European Championship debutants last summer, Wilkinson is unable to call on seven players she selected in her squad for the Switzerland showpiece due to injury, with another having already retired.

Josie Green, Ella Powell, Rhiannon Roberts, Lily Woodham, Rachel Rowe, Soffia Kelly – who has yet to make her Wales debut despite her Euro 2025 selection – and Esther Morgan are all currently sidelined.

That opens the way for eight uncapped players, with Mia Ross, Annie Wilding, Gwen Zimmerman, Scarlett Hill and Amy Richardson getting their first squad call-ups, while Poppy Soper, Teagan Scarlett and Tianna Teisar are also hoping to win first Wales caps.

Forward Kayleigh Barton announced her retirement from all football in August, and the upcoming international window will be the first Wales camp without her involvement.
