Two women die in separate road crashes

Two woman have died in separate road crashes in counties Tyrone and Londonderry.

A female driver died at the scene following a two-vehicle collision on the Windyhill Road near Macosquin village, just outside Coleraine, at about 15:10 GMT on Thursday.

Another woman, who was a passenger in a vehicle, died following a crash near the Old Loughry Road in Cookstown just after 17:00 GMT later the same day.

Following the crash in Cookstown, two male drivers of both vehicles and a young child were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

In a statement, Ulster Unionist councillor Trevor Wilson described the crash in Cookstown as a “heartbreaking tragedy”.

“It will bring unimaginable distress and grief to the family and friends of this woman,” he said.

“I send my heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved and my thoughts are also with the family and friends of those who were injured.”

Causeway Coast and Glens councillor Richard Holmes expressed his sympathies to the family of the young woman killed in the Macosquin crash.

“I want to extend my deepest sympathies to all of her family and friends at this incredibly difficult time,” Holmes said.

“Sadly, we are seeing far too many people losing their lives on our roads and another family is left mourning the loss of a loved one.”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are investigating the circumstances of both collisions and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They have asked for anyone who may have dash-cam footage of either incident to contact them.
