Rapist from Orkney jailed for ‘life-changing’ attack in Aberdeen

A man who raped a woman in an Aberdeen hotel has been jailed for four years.

First offender Ewan Brown, 28, formerly from Orkney, was found guilty of the attack which happened back in 2019.

He had denied committing the offence at an earlier trial at the High Court in Inverness, but was found guilty of rape when she was incapable of giving or withholding consent to sex.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Fairley said he understood from a victim impact statement that the consequences of the crime for the woman were “life changing in many respects”.

The judge told Brown: “You were convicted by a jury of a single charge of rape of a heavily intoxicated woman.”

Defence solicitor advocate Kris Gilmartin said Brown was a skilled sheep shearer.

“It is acknowledged on his behalf that this is a serious offence and a custodial sentence is inevitable,” he said.

“Upon his release he will find work hard to come by. It is a small community and will have to live with the shame of the conviction.”

Brown was also told he will be on the sex offenders register for an indefinite period.
