Tribute to ‘hero’ primary teacher who died on Christmas Day

A teacher who died of cancer on Christmas Day was “very passionate about giving all children the opportunity to succeed”, his wife has said.

Damian Barr, who taught at St Margaret Mary’s primary school in Huyton, Knowsley, died aged 50, having managed to attend his son’s wedding in October.

He was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in the appendix after becoming sick on a Spanish trip to celebrate his 25th wedding anniversary.

His wife Karen, who is a head teacher at another Merseyside school, said he helped children “develop their confidence and personalities, their whole being”.

“He was always passionate about that, because he believed everybody can achieve their own standard, but equally important is how they going are going to cope in life,” she said.

He was also manager at his son’s football club, ensuring that all children had time to play, she said.

“Damian just wanted to make sure everyone was involved and enjoyed themselves.”

She added: “His family were very important to him, so even when his health started to seriously deteriorate, he was determined to be there for us at Christmas.

“He kept asking every day, how many more days is it until Christmas, and he made it for us, he got to Christmas day with us, but sadly, he passed away that same day.”

His son Daniel, who described him as a “hero”, brought forward his wedding day to October after his dad was told at the start of 2025 that his condition was terminal.

“It meant everything to have him there and to share that day with him, and we’ll cherish those memories forever,” he said.
