STV to water down plans for changes to news programmes

Broadcaster STV is set to water down controversial plans for changes to news programmes.

If had proposed dropping the separate news service for viewers in the northern half of Scotland.

But tv regulation Ofcom is expected to start a consultation on a significantly modified scheme this week.

This scheme would retain some separate news output purely for the north. Full details of the proposal could be announced as early as Tuesday.

STV and Ofcom will hope it goes some way towards addressing concerns over the original plans.

STV currently provides two separate need services – one for the central belt, the other for the northern half of the country.

In September it announced plans for one service which would cover both areas.

The revised scheme is expected to represent a compromise.

The north would still lose its entirely separate service and all studio presentation would still move to Glasgow.

But the main 18:00 programme would be split in two.

Part of it would cover Scottish national news and be shown in both central and northern Scotland.

Then viewers in each area would get their own separate section with regional and local stories.

Full details will be announced when Ofcom begins its consultation.
