Slieve Binnian on fire for second time this week

Firefighters are at the scene of another blaze on Slieve Binnian in the Mourne Mountains.

Six fire engines and a command support unit were dispatched to the fire on Wednesday evening, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said.

It follows a large gorse fire on the mountain on Monday, and two other blazes in the area last week, one near Silent Valley and another near Castlewellan, in County Down.

The fire near Castlewellan is believed to have been started deliberately.

DUP assembly member Diane Forsythe said it was “sad to see” Slieve Binnian on fire again.

“Thanks to the vigilant members of the public for ringing 999. Please can people stay away from the area and let the Fire and Rescue Service do their jobs,” she wrote on social media.
