At least five children have died in a landslide caused by heavy monsoon rains in Bangladesh, two days after eight people, including five children, died in a separate landslide in the area.

Rescuers continue to search for more children feared to be buried after the landslide hit an Islamic school for Rohingya refugees in the southeastern Cox’s Bazar district while pupils were attending classes, according to local fire officials.

More than 1.2 million Rohingya Muslims live in the overcrowded refugee camps after fleeing a 2017 military crackdown in neighbouring Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

It comes after eight people, including five children, were killed in landslides that buried shelters and makeshift homes at Rohingya camps in the area under mud and debris while residents were asleep overnight from Sunday to Monday.

Officials said the victims’ bodies had been recovered, while another two children had been found with injuries.

More rain is forecast for the coming days, and authorities said they were relocating refugees from hillsides considered to be at risk, with around 1,000 already evacuated.

Officials said the refugees are often reluctant to leave their makeshift homes despite warnings.

Meanwhile, in India‘s western Maharashtra state, officials said at least 13 people have died in rain-related incidents over the past few days as monsoon weather intensified.

It comes as rescue teams in the southern Indian state of Kerala are searching for five people still missing a day after heavy monsoon rains caused a deadly landslide, officials said.

The landslide killed at least three people working near a tunnel construction site in Wayanad district, a hilly region known for its forests and rolling green landscapes.

Seven workers were also injured and are undergoing treatment in a hospital.

In the northern Himalayan regions of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, several villages were cut off after torrential rain triggered flash floods and landslides.

Severe flooding also hit southern China this week, and could expand to other provinces with the arrival of Super Typhoon Bavi at the weekend.

At least six people died, with 375,000 others affected, officials said. The number killed is expected to rise.
