There could be more than 60 possible victims in a case involving a Catholic priest charged with child sex offences, a court has been told.

Edward Gallagher, 58, of Orchard Park, Lifford, County Donegal, in the Republic of Ireland, is charged with one count of attempted sexual communication with a child between 2 April and 17 April 2025.

He is further charged with offences including inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and causing a child to watch sexual activity on 17 April.

At a hearing at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, a prosecutor told the court that an examination of the devices seized had been completed.

The lawyer said “sixty plus possible victims” had been identified and this would need to be further investigated before any more progress could be made in the case.

The prosecution applied for a four-week adjournment and the case was put back until 9 October.

Fr Gallagher has been in custody since his arrest in April and there has been no application for bail.
