Rotherham 2-1 Millwall: Charlie Wyke scores late Millers winner

Sebastian Revan of Rotherham
Sebastian Revan scored his first Rotherham goal as the Millers beat Millwall in the Championship.

Charlie Wyke’s late goal gave Championship strugglers Rotherham victory over Millwall.

The Millers needed a win to avoid relegation to League One being confirmed.

Sebastian Revan’s first Rotherham goal was cancelled out by Ryan Longman’s equaliser.

But striker Wyke, on loan from Wigan, nodded home in the 86th minute to clinch the three points.

The result ensured Rotherham still remain a Championship side with their next game at home to strugglers Plymouth, who haven’t won any of their past five matches.

The Millers are bottom on 23 points, 16 behind 23rd-placed Sheffield Wednesday.

The first 20 minutes of the game were fairly even between the two sides, with not many notable chances.

The visitors were forced into an early change when Scottish defender Murray Wallace was substituted because of injury and replaced by Danny McNamara.

In the 34th minute, Zian Flemming’s shot from the edge of the box was parried at full stretch by keeper Viktor Johansson.

After the break, Millwall increased the tempo, forcing consecutive corners, but were still unable to find the breakthrough.

Millwall had a big opportunity when Duncan Watmore received the ball from Flemming, but when through on goal he was unable to find the target.

Johansson was called into action a number of times, denying Japhet Tanganga from a corner minutes after Watmore’s chance.

Despite this pressure, it was Aston Villa loanee Revan who scored the opener for the hosts with a low curling effort into the far corner of Matija Sarkic’s net in the 71st minute.

The goal was Revan’s first in senior football – and Rotherham’s first in six matches.

The Lions equalised five minutes later through Longman. When a corner was half-cleared, Jake Cooper hooked the ball back into a dangerous area where Longman was on hand to smash the ball home.

Leam Richardson’s side hit back though as Revan turned from scorer to provider, crossing into the box, finding Wyke who nodded home.

Rotherham manager Leam Richardson told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“It’s a very pleasing result. We knew exactly what Millwall would bring and we matched that.

“I’m very pleased for the players and pleased the fans can go home with a smile on their face.

“We’re a club in transition and we want to be a better version of ourselves going forward.”

Millwall manager Neil Harris told BBC Radio London:

“The first half was very scrappy, the atmosphere here was terrible and the referee was horrific.

“We did enough to win two or three games of football there.

“Second half we’ve made a dozen opportunities to score and rather than Rotherham win the game, we lost that game.”
