Police are increasing patrols in the Harvie Avenue area of Newton Mearns

Police are investigating reports of a hate crime after a Muslim girl was allegedly attacked by a man as she walked home from school in East Renfrewshire.

The incident is said to have happened on Harvie Avenue in Newton Mearns at about 16:00 on Monday.

Newton Mearns Islamic Centre has highlighted the alleged attack, as well as a previous incident involving a 15-year-old girl on the same street.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Inquiries are ongoing and officers will be carrying out increased patrols in the area.”
