A litter picking group have called on people to take their rubbish home after collecting almost half a tonne of rubbish from a popular beach after a firework display.
Volunteer Liv Waldock, 29, from Porthcawl, Bridgend county, said the Porthcawl Wombles group picked up 433kg of rubbish following a display at Coney Beach last Wednesday, which is almost three times what they usually find.
The most common items found were dirty nappies, volunteers said, but umbrellas, toys and tents were also found along the shore, with one volunteer stepping on a skewer from a barbecue.
Ms Waldock described it as “absolutely crazy” to see the rubbish covering not just the beach but the streets around it, and urged people to be more aware of the damage littering causes.
