A woman has died after being hit by a car which then fled the scene in Glasgow.

She was struck at a crossing island near the entrance for Burger King and Starbucks on Castlebank Street in the city’s Partick area at about 20:45 on Tuesday.

Police said the pedestrian was hit by a small black or dark coloured car which failed to stop.

She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but pronounced dead a short time after arrival.

Officer are trying to trace the car and the road has been closed for investigation. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.

Sgt Stewart Taylor said: “Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the young woman who has died in this incident.

“Our inquiries to establish the full circumstances and identify the car and driver involved are ongoing.

“The vehicle involved is described as being a small, dark coloured ‘city car’ model which was travelling west on Castlebank Street at the time of the collision.”
