Norway VAR protests: NFF in favour of technology despite opposition from clubs and fans

The Norwegian Football Federation says it is in favour of keeping the video assistant referee despite strong opposition from clubs and fans.

Last summer, Rosenborg and Lillestrom’s game in the Norwegian Eliteserien was abandoned when fans threw fishcakes, tennis balls and smoke bombs on to the pitch in protest against the use of VAR.

Supporters claim the technology, which was introduced in Norway in 2023, disrupts the flow of a game, while clubs say the current version is not working properly.

NFF president Lise Klaveness said the best thing for Norwegian football is to “maintain and develop” VAR.

Last week, Norsk Topfotball, which represents the 32 club’s in Norway’s top two divisions, voted to scrap VAR “as soon as possible”.

The NFF will argue its stance at a gathering involving professional and amateur clubs as well as representatives of women’s teams.

A decision on whether or not to retain VAR will be made at a meeting in early March.
