Muriel’s Wedding star Collette dances into Glasgow

Hollywood star Toni Collette has surprised a cinema audience in Glasgow at a special screening of her breakout film Muriel’s Wedding.

She danced on stage to Dancing Queen – ABBA’s hit song used in the 1994 film – then shared memories of filming as a young actress.

Collette’s appearance at Glasgow Film Festival was kept tightly under wraps.

The Australian actress, currently filming in London, had been asked to record an introduction video but said she decided to “hop on a train to join the dance” instead.

Footage captured the audience’s amazement at the event in Cottiers Theatre, a former church in the West End of Glasgow.

In a post on Instagram, Collette wrote: “I had no idea how much love would be in that room. Love for Muriel, love for the film and love for me.

“It was outrageously fun and quite moving. When I was 20 I had no idea how this story would resonate all these years later.

“Thank you for having me. I’m truly touched.”

Collette rose to fame after playing socially-awkward Muriel in the Australian comedy drama.

She went on to star in hit films including The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine and Hereditary, and is currently in Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17.

At the event, Collette spoke to Glasgow Film Festival director Allison Gardner, who is marking her final year at the helm.

This year’s edition of the festival has welcomed actors including James McAvoy, Jessica Lange, Tim Roth and Ed Harris.
