TransPennine ExpressA railway station cat turned internet sensation has taken retirement from his role as senior pest controller.
Bolt has been patrolling Huddersfield Station since 2019, capturing the hearts of passengers and his thousands of social media followers.
However, with extensive improvement works at the station as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, a decision was made to rehome Bolt with his “station mum” Jacqui and feline friend Buddy.
In a post to his 170,000 Facebook followers, Bolt’s spokesperson said he would now “enjoy the luxuries of being a normal cat who can explore gardens, enjoy the fresh country air and have his (mostly welcome) companion by his side”.
Bolt began life at Huddersfield Station as an apprentice in 2019, learning the ropes from the famous Felix, who had patrolled there since 2011.
The photogenic pair featured in two Sunday Times bestselling books together, with Bolt promoted to senior pest controller after Felix passed away aged 12 in 2023.
A TransPennine Express spokesperson said the cats’ popularity transcended the immediate area, with visitors from around the world making special trips to Huddersfield station just to meet them.
Bolt left the station for the last time on Sunday and would not be returning, his spokesperson said.
“It simply would be too confusing and stressful for him,” they added, confirming that occasional updates would still be provided to his fans.
OtherAs well as his no-nonsense approach to pest control, the black cat became known for his frequent photo updates at spots around the station.
He could also occasionally be spotted hanging out with Buddy when taking a break from work.
Andrew McClements, from TransPennine Express, said Bolt had “brought comfort and a smile to many after having been raised at the station from a kitten and mentored by his predecessor, Felix”.
Work on the Grade I Listed Huddersfield Station includes extending platforms, building a new footbridge and refurbishing the roof.
The station will be closed from between30 August and 29 September to allow further work to take place.
The station upgrade is expected to be completed in early 2027.
