‘Medical cannabis dramatically altered the course of my life’

Software engineer Devon McCarthy says medical cannabis “dramatically” altered the course of his life after getting a prescription for treatment-resistant depression.

The 30-year-old, who lives in Cardiff but works in London’s finance industry, has only shared the details of his completely legal prescription with his employer after agreeing to feature in the BBC’s reporting.

He had previously been using alcohol as a way of trying to “deal with” his depression, but said his cannabis prescription had a “transformative” effect on his life and helped him stop drinking.

“It’s not a silver bullet. It’s not going to just cure your depression. I still had to go through the process of finding a therapist and working through all these different things,” he said.

“But for me, it dramatically altered the course of my life.”
