Man charged in connection with detective’s shooting

A man has been charged in relation to the attempted murder of Det Ch Insp John Caldwell in February 2023.

The 73-year-old was arrested and detained under the Terrorism Act in the Ardboe area on Tuesday.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said he has been charged with the preparation of terrorist acts and perverting the course of justice.

He is due to appear before Strabane Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

A second man, aged 37, who was arrested on Tuesday has been released to be reported to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

The senior detective was off duty when he was shot several times at a sports complex after coaching a youth football team in Omagh, County Tyrone.
