Icy patches and snowfall hit Wales counties as 62 schools close

More than 60 schools across parts of Wales are closed as icy and cold conditions continue to bite.

According to Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion councils, 62 schools have been closed on Friday because of overnight wintry showers that turned into ice.

The Met Office has placed the counties under a yellow weather warning for ice until 11:00 GMT. It said overnight wintry showers had led to icy patches in low-level areas, while higher levels had seen snowfall of between 1cm (0.39in) and 3cm (1.18in).

National Grid said hundreds of properties that suffered power cuts in West Wales and Pontypridd on Thursday had since had power restored.

Pembrokeshire County Council said icy conditions on roads across the county were “treacherous”, and warned people to only travel “if essential”.

The Met Office has forecasted a “dry and sunny day with lighter winds” for the rest of Friday after the yellow warning lifts, with a maximum temperature of 7C (44.6F).

It added people must “be prepared for weather warnings to change”.
