Ice skating on Oxford’s frozen-over Port Meadow

With temperatures plummeting in the new year, parts of Oxford have turned to ice.

Port Meadow has become a magnet for skaters whenever the chill is deep enough to create a natural rink across the field.

The phenomenon happens when the meadow floods and then freezes, leaving a sheet of shallow ice with no deep water beneath – unlike rivers or lakes, which can be far more dangerous.

Ianthe, a local skater who has been coming to skate on the frozen water for 65 years, said: “Its fantastic… if the ice is smooth it’s really wonderful.”
