Nursery operations director, Annefrances McGrath, said: “We came up with the story that the Grinch had visited the nursery and been really naughty, and smashed some glass.
“Then it grew arms and legs from there.”
Nursery children dressed in hi-vis vests and police hats were told that the Grinch, who was lurking in their nursery garden, was trying to sneak away with a bag of chocolate.
After using a large net to help community police officer Declan McInnes capture their suspect, they led the Grinch to a waiting police van before locking him inside.
The children then took the Grinch’s bag, which had been filled with chocolate that was donated by the police.
The arrest was captured by the nursery’s CCTV cameras.
Ms McGrath said PC McInnes would be back in the New Year to give the children a follow-up on their case on how the Grinch was doing after being locked up.
She said arresting the Grinch empowered the children and gave them “reassurance” that their nursery was a safe space again before the Christmas holidays.
