Flooded A1(M) in County Durham shut indefinitely

Part of a motorway had to be closed and train services were cancelled after heavy rain deluged the north east of England.

The A1(M) in County Durham shut in both directions after flooding between Newton Aycliffe and Sedgefield on Wednesday morning.

National Highways said there was “no timescale” for reopening the road which is the main route south from Newcastle to the rest of the region and most of England.

Officials said the flooding was caused by the “sheer volume” of rain water running off nearby fields, rather than drainage problems.
