FIH Hockey World Cup qualifying: Wales narrowly beaten by Uruguay

Wales’ Hockey World Cup qualification hopes hang by a thread after an agonising 3-2 defeat by Uruguay in Hyderabad, India.

Wales made a bright start as Anja Atkin opened the scoring on four minutes.

Manuela Vilar equalised for Uruguay from a penalty corner in the second to tie the scores at the interval.

Agustina Diaz then gave the South Americans the lead with another penalty corner in the third before Teresa Viana doubled their lead.

Rachel Goodwin tapped home from close range in the fourth quarter, after a brilliant run from Betsan Thomas up the right hand side of the pitch, but it proved to just be a consolation goal.

Kevin Johnson’s side will miss out on a chance of qualification if Scotland fail to beat India later on Monday, after Wales’ opening 1-0 loss to Scotland on Sunday.
