Elfyn Evans: Welsh driver’s WRC hopes fading after troubles in Greece

Belgian Neuville picked up the maximum 18 Saturday points plus a further six on Sunday. He leads the championship by 34 points from eight-time winner Sebastien Ogier.

Frenchman Ogier – a Gazoo Rally team-mate of Evans – also rolled his Toyota, while pushing on the final powerstage, but recovered to finish and bank 13 points for the weekend.

Neuville led a Hyundai one-two-three in Greece, with Ogier’s roll gifting Spain’s Daniel Sordo second place and promoting Estonian Ott Tanak to the final podium position.

Evans and co-driver Scott Martin were runners-up in the World Rally Championship in 2020, 2021 and 2023, but are yet to win a rally in 2024.

They collected no points from the previous round after crashing out on the final day at Rally Finland.

A maximum of 30 points are available from each rally, with three events remaining on the 13-race calendar.

The contest resumes in Chile from 26-29 September, before October’s Central European Rally and the concluding Rally Japan in November.
