Cushion covers ‘saved my mum’s life’

An 82-year-old has earned the title of “cushion queen” among her friends and family after raising more than £129,000 for charity.

Jan O’Neil has upcycled donated fabrics and made more than 40,000 cushion covers.

She started volunteering decades ago after a personal tragedy changed her life, and Susan Wilson – Mrs O’Neil’s daughter – says making the cushion covers has saved her mum’s life.

The 82-year-old sews every day, creating cushion covers that she sells at an Accord Hospice charity shop in Paisley, where she works three times a week.

The cushion covers feature animals and feature tartans, thistles, or Scottie dogs, and have been bought by customers from across the world, including some in North America, Africa and Australia.

Mrs O’Neil says her next goal is to reach the £150,000 milestone.
