County Championship: Derbyshire and Glamorgan off amid high winds

High winds sweeping across the Midlands caused play to be called off on the opening day between Derbyshire and Glamorgan because of dangerous conditions.

Despite dry weather for most of the day, the strength of the winds meant it was judged unsafe for the ground-staff to remove the covers, which had been extended across the square because of overnight rain.

Umpires Steve O’Shaughnessy and Suri Shanmugam made a series of checks before calling off play at 15:05 BST.

Derbyshire go into the penultimate round of the Championship season 27 points behind Glamorgan, who could seal promotion with a draw with a match to spare, if none of the chasing pack wins.

With their rivals elsewhere also confined to the pavilion, there was no change in the promotion race.
