Wrexham have confirmed club captain James McClean is leaving the Championship club “to pursue another opportunity”.

McClean’s contract does not expire until the summer of 2027 but has been linked with a return to hometown club Derry City in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

The 36-year-old former Republic of Ireland midfielder has made over 108 appearances for Wrexham in all competitions, scoring eight goals.

“Jimmy’s going on to pursue another opportunity that he’s looking at,” Wrexham CEO Mike Williamson said.

The club has yet to confirm when McLean, who has played a key role in two successive promotion campaigns, will leave.
