Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to the scene on Monday afternoon

A woman whose death in a house fire is being treated as murder has been named locally as Heather Edwards.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to the blaze, near Bwlch-llan, Ceredigion, at about 14:15 BST on Monday.

A 58-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The fire service said crews battled a “well-developed” fire within a two-storey house attached to a farmhouse, with firefighting efforts made harder by strong winds.

During the incident, “new information made it apparent” that one individual was unaccounted for and a body was discovered in the building once the fire had been brought under control, the fire service added.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the damage to the property was “extensive” and that the man under arrest remained in police custody.

Ceris Jones, who represents the Llanfihangel Ystrad ward on Ceredigion council said: “This sad news has come as a shock to us all. I can only extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends.”
