Firefighters fought a large blaze overnight that engulfed several beach huts.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service crews tackled the fire on East Beach, Undercliff Drive, on the Bournemouth seafront after it broke out in the early hours of the morning across a 25m by 15m (82ft by 49ft) area.

Westbourne Fire Station said the incident was “generating a lot of smoke”, and advised nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.

The fire has now been extinguished but nine huts have been destroyed.

The fire service was called to the site at 01:20 BST, with crews attending from Springbourne, Westbourne and Redhill Park. An aerial ladder platform was also present.

It said: “Two main jets and four hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire, and the stop was at 02:50.

“The scene was handed over to BCP Council, and investigations will continue today into what caused the fire.”

Officers from Dorset Police were also in attendance during the operation.

Partially damaged at the site is also the UK’s first council-owned beach hut, which is adorned with a blue plaque.

The traditional-style hut, located 500 ft (150m) east of Bournemouth Pier, was built in 1909 by F P Dolamore – the borough engineer at the time.
