Leicestershire have signed batter Sheridon Gumbs on a three-and-a-half-year contract after impressing during a one-month deal with the East Midlands side.

The 22-year-old former England Under-19s international spent 18 months with the Foxes’ second XI before he was given a one-month contract and promoted to make his County Championship debut in June.

Gumbs – who came through the youth ranks at Surrey, where he made four One-Day Cup appearances in 2022 – made 49 in his second innings on his first-class debut for Leicestershire against Essex.

He then went on to play a part in the Foxes’ milestone victory – their first in the top flight for 8,318 days – against Yorkshire later that month.

Gumbs went on to feature in the T20 Blast for the first time earlier in July and now has a contract that will run until the end of the 2029 season.

“It’s the best news I could have got,” Gumbs told BBC Sport about his long-term deal.

“It’s a massive weight off my shoulders and allows me to come in and be a better version of myself. I’m getting used to the environment and the lads, and it has been unbelievable.”

Leicestershire director of cricket Claude Henderson described Gumbs as a player with “a huge amount of potential”.
