A primary school has been forced to shut after a burst water pipe caused “substantial damage” to its internal structure.

Ysgol Cae Top in Bangor, Gwynedd, moved to its present £4m site in 2009 and had 237 pupils last year.

Arrangements for remote learning were put in place and the local authority, Cyngor Gwynedd, said it was “working on a plan to allow staff and pupils to return to their classrooms safely”.

Following the incident, which happened over the weekend, Cyngor Gwynedd said staff have been stripping out the damaged carpets and moving furniture so the full extent of the damage could be assessed.

It said only then could repairs be carried out.

“We are grateful to the pupils, their families and the wider community for their patience and understanding while we deal with this emergency situation and as alternative arrangements are put in place,” the council said in a statement.
