Elfyn Evans is running in second place at the opening round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) season in Monte Carlo.
Eight-time WRC champion Sebastien Ogier holds a 20.3 second lead over Toyota team-mate Evans with three stages remaining.
Welsh driver Evans and co-driver Scott Martin have traded positions on several occasions with France’s Adrien Fourmaux in a fierce battle for second place.
Evans, 36, holds a 4.3 second advantage over Fourmaux, whose Hyundai team-mate Ott Tanak won four of Saturday’s six stages to move within 2.5 seconds of the podium places.
“I’m happy to be in the fight and everyone is staying on their toes,” Evans said on Rally TV.
“It’s a big gap to Seb if everything is straightforward but you never know in this rally.”
Josh McErlean, from Northern Ireland, is ninth on his debut in the top tier of the WRC in his M-Sport Ford Puma Rally 1.
“Step-by-step it’s going nicely,” the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver, 25, told Rally TV.
“I’m getting more comfortable with everything – the pace notes, the pace of the car. It’s been a big step up and it’s nice to get this far, but there’s still another job to do tomorrow.”
Reigning champion Thierry Neuville is eighth after two incidents on the same corner in both the morning and afternoon loop on Friday.
The three remaining stages in the mountains above Monaco take place on Sunday morning.
