World Cup 1966 toy mascot ‘tinged with sadness’ to be repaired

A World Cup stuffed lion which holds a 60-year-old love story “tinged with sadness” will be seen being repaired as part of the BBC One show The Repair Shop.

Teddy bear experts Amanda Middleditch and Julie Tatchell worked their magic on World Cup Willie, a toy from the 1966 World Cup belonging to Stephanie, from London, as part of an episode to be shown at 20:00 BST.

The lion is symbolic of the year Stephanie fell in love with going to matches with her boyfriend Chris, who later became her husband. He died from an asthma attack nine months after the birth of their daughter Alison.

The toy carried “a lovely story but tinged, obviously, with sadness”, Tatchell, who lives in Gloucestershire, said.
