Women’s Super League: Wigan Warriors 12-16 St Helens – visitors go top

St Helens leapfrogged Wigan to go top of Women’s Super League as they held off a second-half Warriors fightback at the Brick Community Stadium.

Saints claimed a seventh successive victory in all competitions to complete a derby double over their nearest challengers.

The visitors’ early pressure was rewarded with a try from Rachael Woosey just eight minutes in as she dived over in the corner.

Faye Gaskin converted but hit the post with her second effort 15 minutes later after Woosey put Saints 10-0 ahead with a virtual replica of her first try.

Ellise Derbyshire crossed to give Wigan hope after the break and Isabel Rowe’s touchline conversion cut the deficit to four points.

However, Vicky Whitfield snuffed out the hosts’ comeback hopes by going over 10 minutes from time, before Eva Hunter bagged a Wigan consolation at the end.
