A woman who allegedly spat at police and kicked one officer eight times in the head and face has been refused bail.

Josie McCaughey, 33, of Beraghvale in Londonderry, is charged with a number of offences on February 19, including assault on police, criminal damage to a police vehicle, assaulting police causing actual bodily harm and attempted grievous bodily harm to police.

A police officer told Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on Thursday the accused was intoxicated when they arrived at the scene and became violent towards them.

She is alleged to have spat at one officer before being restrained and put into a police vehicle. Once in the vehicle, she is then said to have spat again at police.

The police officer told the court that during the incident, Ms McCaughey also kicked one officer in the head and face eight times.

He said this caused a laceration to their head that had to later be glued shut.

The court was also told the injured officer had a concussion, bruising and whiplash.

District Judge Barney McElhom refused bail and Ms McCaughey is due to appear again next month.
