Why did only two Iranian football players stay in Australia?

Advertisements

After Australia granted seven Iranian football players humanitarian visas to stay in the country, only two have decided to stay.

According to human rights activists, those who left feared reprisals from the Iranian Government, but the semi-official Mehr news agency called it a “patriotic decision”.

The footballers had originally sought sanctuary after concerns they would face repercussions for staying silent during the country’s anthem at their opening Asian Cup match.
