Which county can claim gold medal hero Daniel Wiffen?

While the excellence of Daniel Wiffen’s performance in winning Gold in the 800m swimming freestyle is not in doubt, one issue has been causing some friendly rivalry.

What county in Northern Ireland is the 23-year-old from?

Wiffen’s home village of Magheralin straddles the border between counties Down and Armagh, though it’s officially in County Down.

However, Daniel, a past pupil of St Patrick’s Grammar School in Armagh, has typically been referred to as a being from the orchard county.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s final, he referred to Armagh’s All-Ireland Gaelic Football victory on Sunday,

“Yeah, Armagh won,” he said.

“My birthday is on July 14th, Bastille Day, what is it, 100 years since Ireland competed in Paris? It just seems everything is aligning, doesn’t it?”

In a post-win interview he added: “What can we say? We’re [Armagh] All-Ireland champions and Olympic gold medallists. What a great county.”
