A nutritionist has revealed a common kitchen item that can help you lose weight and make your skin look amazing.

It can be hard to keep up good eating habits and keep our skin, hair and nails healthy during the winter months.

We all want to eat comfort food when it’s cold, and the combination of cold weather and central heating can dry out our bodies.

But health experts have said there’s a surprising item in your kitchen cupboard that could improve your overall health if you use it for 30 days – olive oil.

They suggested having a shot of olive oil every day for a month for improved skin health and even weight loss.

Abigail Roberts, a Sports Nutritionist at Bulk.com, explained: “When you drink olive oil daily, something extraordinary can happen to you.

“It is packed with antioxidant compounds, like vitamin E, oleacein, and oleocanthal, as well as compounds called polyphenols, which are phenomenal for your hair, skin, joints, and weight.”

When it comes to looking after your skin, nails, and hair, “olive oil is full of healthy fatty acids” which can really help.

Abigail added to Mirror.co.uk: “It’s also packed with antioxidants and skin-friendly lipids that can help tackle skin problems like dryness or rough-feeling skin.

“While lots of people spend a lot of money on skin creams and hair masks, they often forget about their diet. What we eat and drink is just as important as what we put on our skin.”

The Mediterranean diet, which includes lots of olive oil, is known to be good for you, and TV doctor Dr Michael Mosley is a big fan.

The diet is full of olive oil, nuts, and oily fish, and he’s been following it for years. He says sticking to the diet for the past decade has “helped me keep weight off and my blood pressure and blood sugar levels within a healthy range.”

And when it comes to losing weight, Abigal said: “Olive oil helps you lose weight because it is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. These are known to help with weight loss by speeding up your metabolism, reducing your appetite, and cutting down your body fat.

“Studies have shown that a group of people who were given extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) lost 80% more body fat than a group who didn’t have EVOO.”
