Wayne Madsen: Derbyshire captain signs new one-year deal

Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the County Ground beyond his 42nd birthday.

The South Africa-born batter joined the East Midlands club in 2009, and is the county’s second-highest scorer across all formats, with more than 22,500 runs to his name.

Madsen, who skippered Derbyshire to the Division Two title and promotion in 2012, reclaimed the captaincy in March, nine years after he stepped down from the role.

He was described by the club as “one of county cricket’s modern greats”, and his newest deal was teased with a video, external of a solemn-looking Madsen appearing to be about to announce his retirement before thrusting his arms in the air to say “I’m not leaving”.

The new contract will run until the end of the 2026 season.

“I still feel like I’m at the top of my game and I don’t want to slow down anytime soon,” he told the club website., external
