Watch: ‘We’ll just have to pay’ – mixed reaction to Venice tourist fee trial

Tourists visiting Venice will now need to pay a fee when making day trips to the famous city, as part of a bid to combat over-tourism.

The €5 (£4) entrance fee – which is required only for access to Venice’s historic centre – will apply on 29 peak days, mostly weekends, as part of a trial phase lasting until 14 July.

Day trippers who fail to pay the fee will face fines between €50 (£43) and €300 (£257).

BBC Rome Correspondent Mark Lowen spoke to visitors about how they felt about the charge.
