US president Donald Trump attended a dignified transfer for two US National Guard members and a US civilian killed in Syria. The somber ceremony took place at the Dover Air Force Base in the US state of Delaware.

The two soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed in Syria in an ambush by an Islamic State (IS) gunman, the US Central Command (Centcom) said.

According to the US Army, the two soldiers killed were Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown. Interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat, a US civilian, was also killed.

Officials said three other service members were injured in the attack, during which the gunman was “engaged and killed”. Syria’s state news said two Syrian service personnel were also injured.
