38-year-old Aoife Lennon was pronounced dead at the scene

Tributes have been paid to a sportswoman who has died following a collision between a car and a truck in County Monaghan.

Gardaí say the incident happened on the N2 in Castleshane at 14:45 local time on Wednesday.

Aoife Lennon, 38, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was from Derrynoose in County Armagh.

The Ladies Gaelic Football Association described her as an “extremely warm and caring person” who “left a long-lasting legacy”.

Ms Lennon was a former player with Armagh LGFA, in their Junior All Ireland winning team in 2005 and their Ulster winning team in 2004.

She went on to coach Gaelic football in primary schools and Armagh GAA said it was “deeply saddened” by her death.

In a statement the club said: “Aoife was a talented player & coach and impacted many young boys and girls’ journeys with Gaelic Football in Armagh primary schools.”

Condolences have been offered to Ms Lennon’s family.

Staff at Our Lady’s & St Mochua’s Primary School wrote: “Our Board of Governors, Principal and Staff deeply regret to learn of the untimely passing of Aoife Lennon, our esteemed former Ulster GAA coach.

“May Our Lady & St Mochua pray for her gentle soul.”

A funeral notice said Ms Lennon was “deeply regretted” by her wife, parents, brothers and wider family.
